VICTORVILLE – The City of Victorville was awarded a $15,000 “Let’s Play” Community Construction Grant from the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM, a national non-profit. The grant will be used to build a well-needed new playground at Schmidt Park located near George Boulevard and Mustang Street in the City of Victorville. The grant is part of an initiative to help keep families active and inspiring them to make active play a daily priority. Unstructured, child-directed play is essential for positive physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development, but due to the growth in technology and other factors, kids now receive far less of this time than previous generations.
“Park playgrounds are a key element in keeping our children active and healthy,” said Victorville’s Recreation Manager Janie Lynch. “The benefits are endless when kids have a safe place to play.” This grant will provide for the well-needed upgrade of one of Victorville’s oldest parks, Schmidt Park. City officials said that the playground equipment is decades old and is in dire need of replacement.Over 3,000 people visit the park monthly, with many of the visitors being children looking for a place to play. The playground will be a great gift to the children who visit the park monthly, possibly along with new children.
More than $35.5 million has been committed to Let’s Play through 2019 by Dr. Pepper Snapple. This grant is aimed to build and improve playgrounds in underserved communities. The votes from the community on behalf of the City of Victorville have been a great help to make Victorville one of the lucky grant recipients.
