BAKER, Ca. – Three people were killed and two were severely injured in a traffic collision on the 15 freeway near Halloran Summit Road.
On Monday, September 16, 2019, at around 11:53 a.m., a 31-year-old man from El Cajon, California was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer in the #1 lane on the 15 freeway, north of Halloran Summit Road, at an unknown rate of speed. The driver, a 31-year-old man, had a 25-year-old female passenger and a 1-year-old child passenger.
CHP officials said that for reasons which still remain under investigation, the driver made an unsafe turning movement to the left, causing the Ford to leave the roadway and enter the dirt in the center divider. The vehicle went airborne as it went into the southbound lanes on the 15 freeway, officials said. A 2011 Isuzu box truck driven by a 38-year-old man was driving southbound in the same area of the 15 freeway in the #2 lane into the path of the Ford. The two vehicles went head on as a result killing the driver and his 54-year-old female passenger, who were both Bakersfield residents.
The driver of the Ford and the 1-year-old boy passengers were badly injured. The two were airlifted to University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 25-year-old woman passenger in the Ford, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash died as a result of the collision.
Alcohol and/or drugs are not suspected to be a contributing factor in this collision. This collision is currently under investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Barstow area.
