IONE – A 36-year-old Mule Creek State Prison inmate was found unresponsive in his cell early Tuesday morning prison officials said. Correctional officers located McCormick in his cell at around 6:30 a.m. and immediately initiated life-saving efforts. Despite their efforts, McCormick was pronounced dead approximately one hour later.
The death is being investigated as a homicide, with his cellmate, 35-year-old Brandon Dean being the suspect. Dean was serving a 26 year to life with the possibility of parole sentence for first-degree murder and making terrorist threats. He was received by the California Department of Corrections on March 15, 2001, from San Bernardino County.
McCormick was serving 150 years to life with the possibility of parole for three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder officials said. He was received by the California Department on May 29, 2014, from Shasta County.
Dean has now been placed in a Segregated Unit for the remainder of the investigation.
