APPLE VALLEY – A 32-year-old Apple Valley man was arrested for pointing a green laser in the direction of a Sheriff’s helicopter on Saturday.
At around 8:34 p.m. the Sheriff’s helicopter (40King8) crew were on patrol in the Town of Apple Valley. While in the air, they were struck by the green laser. Using their Forward looking infrared (FLIR) camera they located the subject, later identified as Vincent Henry Orona, of Apple Valley, pointing the laser at the helicopter from his vehicle from 21960 Outer Highway 18. Ground patrol units were called to assist and responded within minutes.
Deputies made contact with Orona and located the laser. He was arrested for Discharge of Laser at Aircraft, which is a felony offense and a Federal offense. “The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department would like to remind the public that pointing any type of laser at an aircraft in operation, while in motion or in flight, could severely damage the pilot’s ability to control the aircraft safely,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials said.
Orona was booked into the High Desert Detention Center and is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon.
