VICTORVILLE, Calif. – 47-year-old Victorville man was arrested after holding his family, some disabled or elderly hostage while threatening them with a knife on Monday evening.
Deputies from the Victorville Station responded to the 12600 block of Dulce Court for the report of a stabbing. “The suspect used a knife to threaten his grandmother, two aunts, and uncle, inside the home they all shared,” said Victorville Sheriff’s Station Spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez. “One of the aunts was able to escape and ran to a neighbor’s home for help.” When deputies arrived they found the suspect’s aunt suffering from multiple injuries sustained while she attempted to escape. Her injuries were non-life-threatening and consisted of cuts to her face and hand. She was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
The suspect refused to exit the home or release the other family members including a 58-year-old woman, a 78-year-old female, a 62-year-old disabled woman, and a 47-year-old disabled man. The Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division assisted and made entry into the home taking the suspect into custody. None of the other victims were injured as a result of the incident.
The suspect was identified as Dexter Barker and was transported to the hospital for a complaint of pain to his foot. He was subsequently booked at the West Valley Detention Center for attempted murder. The case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review and consideration of additional charges.
