BARSTOW – A 28-year-old Barstow man was arrested for stealing a vehicle from a Barstow Del Taco parking lot officials said.
On Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at approximately 11:03 A.M. police responded to the Del Taco located at 401 N. First Avenue in Barstow for the report of a vehicle theft. The caller told dispatchers that an unknown black adult male stole her black 2015 Fiat from the parking lot. After stealing the vehicle, the suspect drove south on Second Avenue. The female victim said that she ran after her vehicle, and a motorist in the area who witnessed the incident, picked her up. The two checked the area for the vehicle, but were unable to locate it.
The officer arrived at the scene and learned that the victim went to the Del Raco, got out of her running vehicle, and walked toward the door of the business. As she opened the door, the suspect, who was wearing a white hat, jumped into the vehicle and left the parking lot. She ran after her vehicle, and after being picked up her and the motorist chased the suspect. They lost sight of the vehicle in the area of Barstow Road and Second Avenue. The victim confirmed to authorities that she did not know the suspect and did not give him permission to drive her vehicle.
Officers and detectives searched for the vehicle. The vehicle was located in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 900 block of South Second Avenue. Joaquin Callins was sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. Officers made contact with Callins and subsequently placed him under arrest. He was booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Possession of a Stolen Vehicle.
