BARSTOW – A 19-year-old Barstow man, who was out on Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) was arrested for stealing a purse from a woman at the Tanger Outlets on Friday. At around 1:00 p.m. Barstow police were dispatched to 2796 Tanger Way in front of Perfumania for the report of a strong armed robbery. The suspect was described as a black man with dreadlocks in his hair. He was described to be wearing a black NBA Chicago Bulls baseball style hat, a black shirt, and black shorts. After grabbing the purse from the female tourist, he left the location in a green Buick.
According to the Barstow Police news release, a witness was able to collect a portion of the license plate. The partial plate, along with the vehicle description, showed vehicle registered to someone living in the 600 block of East Virginia Way. Officers responded to the area and shortly after witnessed the vehicle with two occupants, one matching the suspect description, arrive at the location. Officers approached the vehicle causing one of the occupants to flee, but the suspect with the matching description, identified as Jamison Lamar Smith, who was previously convicted of burglary, was detained.
Officers searched the surrounding area but were unable to locate the second occupant in the vehicle. The purse was located near the suspect vehicle on the ground police and subsequently returned to the victim. Smith was positively identified by witnesses as the suspect and booked into the Barstow Jail for Robbery.
