APPLE VALLEY – One of the three initially arrested for the attempted robbery of an Apple Valley liquor store on Wednesday evening has been released without charges and the remaining two suspects are awaiting hearings for the reduced misdemeanor charges.
Jayquan Crittenden, 28, of Victorville, was arrested along with Edward Johnson,28, and Phillip Dashon Smith, 27, on Wednesday evening after at around 6:06 p.m. deputies were flagged down by an unknown party.
The reporting party told authorities that there were three armed Black male adults two inside and one outside in a white Cadillac at the Grand Liquor Store located at 15355 Rancherias Road. When deputies arrived, Edward Johnson, 28, of Apple Valley was outside and found to be in possession of a firearm, while the Crittenden and Smith were inside the store.
Authorities said that it appeared as though Crittenden and Smith were preparing to steal items inside the store. The three men were taken into custody without incident and a baby, believed to be Johnson’s baby was located inside the vehicle. The three were arrested and booked into the High Desert Detention Center for Child Endangerment, Attempted Robbery and Possession of a Firearm. Child and Family Services was notified of the incident and the baby was returned to the mother.
On Friday, June 23, 2017, Crittenden was released without charges and the charges filed against Johnson and Smith were dropped to merely misdemeanor charges including Petty Theft and Carrying a Concealed Weapon. Bail which was initially $100,000 each was also reduced to $25,000 each as a result of the lesser charges. Johnson was released on bail on Friday night while Smith remains in custody.
