Facebook has yet another requirement for their users, but they are given the choice to either download the new Moments app or lose their photos. This app is not as new as it may sound and it appears to be almost a spin off of the 2012 Photo Sync.
The difference is that the Moments app and Photo Sync is that Moment uploads will not automatically go to Facebook. Facebook officials have made this the choice method of saving and sharing synced photos.
Users that have this Photo Sync album are receiving email notifications alerting them that they will have to install and log into the app by July 7th. If they do not do this but July 7th, their captured “moments” in their Photo Sync album will be no more.
The heavy-handed approach has had some users rushing to download. The only other option is to download a zip file onto your computer to save the photos. This approach seems characteristic of Facebook and fortunate or not has been proven to work for Facebook in the past when in the company had mobile users download the Messenger app in spring 2014.
TechCrunch, an online technical news source reported that this made Messenger climb up the charts to being one of the top apps in the APP Store. They said that Facebook will also be making changes there causing more mobile users to download or give up chat altogether.
For now, there are mixed emotions. Some may defy the push to download the app simply because they defy any push, others will not for personal reasons, some will comply simply to save their photos and some will download only to see what it is about.
Say no to surveillance capitalism by not installing Facebook's Moments app. Let them delete your photos. Plenty of superior alternatives.
