VICTORVILLE – A suspected cockfighting operation was discovered when authorities served a search warrant in the 11300 block of Salem Avenue in Victorville. On Wednesday morning at around 9:50 a.m. the detectives and deputies from the Victor Valley Station served the warrant at the home.
During the search, roosters including two dead ones were found. The roosters were housed in separate cages and the two deceased were found in a wheelbarrow on the property. “Both deceased roosters had lacerations and punctures which were consistent with injuries sustained during a cockfight,” Sheriff’s officials said. “In addition, both roosters had “mole skin” on one foot, wrapped around the leg and natural spur. This method is used by cockfighters to protect the rooster’s leg from the fighting knife once it is applied.”
Fighting roosters in California is a felony, due to the injury and probable death. During the search, 36 fighting roosters, game bird fighting implements, medical supplements, and stimulants were all seized. Authorities said that many of the birds had their combs and waddles cut off to prepare them for fighting.
Efren Cureil, 36, of Victorville, was named a suspect in the case, but authorities believe there are additional unidentified suspects.
