TAFT, Ca. – Thousands of people in the City of Taft are being required to evacuate their homes on Wednesday afternoon after a Taft Manufacturing Company experienced a chemical release.
The City of Taft is located in the San Joaquin Valley, in Kern County approximately 30 miles southwest of Bakersfield. Taft Manufacturing company manufactures specification-grade acrolein, used in the preparation of polyester resin and polyurethane. The plant is located at 19705 South Lake Road and evaluation is required within a 6-mile radius. Those who live from 6-9 miles of the plant should shelter in place, staying inside, closing all windows and doors, shutting off central air conditioning, and closing fireplace vents.
Those who need to evacuate can go to First Baptist Church at 200 North Street in Taft. Animal Services will assist with sheltering companion animals at the center. Those with physical limitations who require assistance evacuating should call the Aging and Adult Services hotline at 1-855-264-6565.
