ADELANTO – Following public scrutiny as a result of the arrest of Adelanto City Councilmember Jermaine Wright in November 2017, there is yet another city employee detained.
On the morning of Tuesday, May 8, 2018, Mayor Richard Kerr was seen handcuffed as Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents presented search warrants for both his home and the city hall. The Daily Press, a Victorville-based newspaper broke the story on Tuesday morning with photos of the mayor in handcuffs apparently being escorted from his home.
The Adelanto city hall was closed to regular city business on Tuesday as a result of the investigation and the Jet Room, a medical cannabis dispensary was also closed with apparent undercover vehicles on the property. “As of this morning, the City is unaware of the nature of the FBI’s investigation,” City officials said in a news release late Tuesday morning. “Nevertheless, the City remains prepared to cooperate with any investigation being conducted.”
The City of Adelanto has been the home for rapid growth with the change in leadership in recent years. Still, the controversial acceptance of medical marijuana facilities and the politics surrounding it has caused division of not only Adelanto residents, but those in the entire Victor Valley. With the alleged corruption of Jermaine Wright being brought into the public eye, all are undoubtedly waiting for the outcome of the newest arrest of the city’s mayor.
City officials have said that they expect the City Hall to open back up tomorrow for regular business. “The City Council wants to assure the public that the City will continue to focus its efforts on providing the services that residents and businesses expect.” As far as what has been released by the FBI or otherwise, there is no firm information released as to what the investigation pertains to. Information regarding the investigation will be updated as it is released.
