SAN BERNARDINO – A San Bernardino Convalescent Home was evacuated due to a fire on Thursday morning, officials said. Shortly before 8:30 a.m. firefighters responded to a call reporting smoke and a water flow alarm at a convalescent home in the 300 block of East Gilbert Street. Upon arrival, firefighters found the four-story structure with smoke coming from an upper floor.
A second alarm was requested, and as firefighters investigated the source of the smoke they discovered it was coming from a single apartment on the second floor. “Personnel assigned to the attack group quickly knocked down the fire while additional companies evacuated residents from the second, third, and fourth floors of the building,” the news release stated.
City Fire Department officials said that the building’s sprinkler system helped keep the fire from spreading but water caused damage to units on the first and second floor of the building. Two residents were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. It is unknown at this time how many residents were displaced.
