RIVERSIDE – A former football player has been arrested for staging multiple collisions totalling a potential loss of approximately $139,000 the California Department of Insurance (CDI) officials said. Jeffrey Leon Webb, 34, of Indio was the ringleader staging four collisions before an insurance company sparked an investigation after a suspicious claim.
Webb, a former Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver, received the majority of the money while working with eight co-conspirators. These four collisions resulted in $70,000 in claims.
“California is ground zero for staged auto collisions,” said Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. “Organized crime rings are responsible for the majority of staged collisions, which are costly to insurers and consumers. The multi-agency Urban Grant Task Force is one of our most effective weapons in eradicating these crimes.”
Soon his plan came to a halt when one of the insurance companies suspected and exposed his fraud to the California Department of Insurance. Through investigation, they learned that both rental and privately owned vehicles were used, and insurance coverage was purchased. During their staged collisions, they purposefully crashed into pole and curbs causing only minor damage to the vehicles but each time they requested medical aid and transport.
