MOUNTAIN VIEW- Search engine giant known as Google has added another messaging app to its arsenal of digital products. Allo, a new competitor to the myriad of messaging apps was introduced to the general public on Wednesday 21, 2016. With it’s newest messaging effort Google intends to acquire users with features such as Google Assistant (Artificial Intelligence), Smart Reply, Sticker Packs, Incognito Chats (End-to-End Encryption), Group Chats and Yell/Whisper text resizing.
I was surprised to see that Google had changed the app icon from the one that I had initially pre-registered for in the Play store during the month of July. Once installing Allo I was thrilled to see how user-friendly the interface was presented to the consumer. Setting up Allo is a straightforward affair, they ask you to register your mobile phone number, to verify it and what Gmail account you will assign to this new messenger.
Once you have the initial setup out of the way you will see a round message icon that you will press to display two sections. The upper section will have three selections: Start group chat, Start incognito chat and Google Assistant. The lower selection is labeled Contacts and should have all of your device contacts populated under this label.
If you have contacts that have Allo installed on their device you will be able to take advantage of all the features that Allo has to offer, such as using Sticker Packs, Yell/Whisper text and Incognito Chats (End-to-End Encryption). If the contact that you are messaging does not have Allo, Google has implemented a workaround feature in which an SMS message is delivered to the recipients SMS messaging client via SMS shortcodes (code shorter than 10-digit telephone numbers).
In keeping messaging with friends and colleagues fun, Allo has an abundance of wonky sticker packs that can be installed at your leisure. They also have included a ton of emoticons which,I know visual communicators will certainly enjoy. Allo has a clever way of expressing the tone of your chat by enabling the user to increase or decrease the text size of a word or phrase.
The feature that I enjoyed the most out of using Allo for the past week is Google Assistant. Being an avid Android user I am savvy at using Google Now for requesting information on the web and commanding my device. Allo lets you request information and command your device within the messaging app. If you look at that top of the app when you are using Google Assistant, you will notice that is states that Google Assistant is still in Beta stage. If this is the beta stage of the platform I am looking forward to the evolution of the service.
If you are bored with your current IM/Messaging app or would like to take Allo for a spin. Here is a link to download it on Google Play Store https://goo.gl/62kFNr and IOS https://goo.gl/hl0r3z
