GRAND TERRACE, Ca. – A Grand Terrace man was arrested for elder abuse after screaming at the elderly woman and swinging a baseball bat in front of a home on Thursday.
At around 8:00 a.m. a concerned citizen called 911 to report the incident in the 21700 block of Dutch Street in Grand Terrace. George Chammas, 55, eventually forced the elderly victim back into the home and refused to let her leave, even damaging her phone.
The deputies approached the home and noticed that Chammas had a firearm. Chammas refused to open the door to allow a welfare check of the victim. He then barricaded him and his victim inside the home by reinforcing multiple entry points in the home.
“Deputies made public announcements (PA) and instructed him to exit the residence and surrender,” Sheriff’s officials said. “The suspect did not respond to any attempts made by law enforcement to communicate. A containment perimeter was established and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) responded and assisted with the incident.”
After nearly a four-hour standoff, Chammas exited the home and was arrested. He was booked at the West Valley Detention Center for kidnapping, false imprisonment and elder abuse, he is being held on $250,000.
The victim was not injured during the incident.
