HEMET – A 16-year-old Hemet juvenile was arrested after making threats to “shoot up the school” to school staff on Tuesday afternoon.
The arrest of the student comes after a week of written threats of violence toward the school. School officials said that the incident took place at around 12:30 p.m. at Diamond Valley Middle School. The student made contact with a school supervisor while standing outside of the fence. The school was in session at the time of the incident when saying that he/she would “shoot up the school while making a hand gesture as if he/she was shooting with a handgun.
The school supervisor reported the incident to the Hemet School Police who immediately responded to the area. The juvenile was detained without incident and was determined to be unarmed. He/she was booked into the Riverside County Juvenile Hall for criminal threats. “I would ask that if you have a child or young adult who is attending school in Hemet that you take a few minutes and have a serious conversation with them about the ramifications of even making a joke about threatening students or a school site,” said Hemet Police Chief Rob Webb. “We will investigate every reported incident and prosecute those who are responsible.”
