BIG RIVER – A 30-year-old Hemet woman was killed as a result of a boating accident on Saturday evening authorities said.
At around 6:30 p.m. San Bernardino County and the Colorado River Boating deputies responded to the report of a fatal boating accident near on the Big River Park on the Colorado River.
Umberto Bagnara, 52, of Hemet the operator of the 19’ closed bow vessel left the launch ramp at Big River Park with 6 passengers on board. Bagnara and his passengers planned on going tubing, but somehow the vessel lost power and water filled the interior causing it to begin sinking.
Bagnara and five of his six passengers were able to swim away from the sinking vessel. Tasha Turner, 30, of Hemet became entangled in the water ski rope attached to the vessel and was pulled down into the water. Dive members located the sunken vessel, but due to the strong current, lighting and water conditions the search for Turner was cancelled until morning.
The search began on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. at which time they recovered Turner and the vessel. The investigation is ongoing.
