HESPERIA – A 54-year-old Chino Hills man lost his life on Sunday afternoon after crashing his 2001 Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle into the side of a vehicle that was towing a boat.
At around 2:35 p.m. Richard Mark Slater was riding westbound on SR-138 just west of Summit Valley Road in Hesperia. Slater attempted to pass a slower moving vehicle on the left crossing double-yellow lines into the eastbound lanes. This maneuver caused his motorcycle to slam into the side of a Crown Victoria that was towing a boat as the driver, 56-year-old Hesperia resident, Jon Nelson began to make a left turn into the gas station.
The force caused Slater to be ejected from the motorcycle onto the hood of the Ford. CPR was administered but when emergency personnel arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Nelson. the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries and declined transport to the hospital.
