HESPERIA – A 62-year-old female pedestrian was struck and killed on Main Street near Balsam in the City of Hesperia on Tuesday morning while she was checking her mail according to the family of the victim.
Little information was shared early on, prior to sufficient information being collected during the preliminary investigation, all that was confirmed early on was that the victim was struck by a hit-and-run driver at around 7:47 a.m.
“The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision fled the scene immediately,” Hesperia Sheriff’s Station officials said. “However, witnesses were able to provide responding units with a description and direction of travel. Deputies searching the area located an unoccupied, silver in color, 2001 Ford Expedition abandoned in the desert off Topaz Avenue, north of Live Oak Street, several miles from the collision scene.” Authorities have positively identified the vehicle as the one involved in the collision. An extensive area search was done with the use of patrol units, Sheriff’s aviation, and a Sheriff’s K-9 but the suspect was not located.
Through the investigation, which was conducted by the Hesperia Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) it was determined that the suspect was traveling west on Main Street when the vehicle left the roadway over the and traveled down the dirt shoulder. The woman was in front of her home and was struck by the passing vehicle which reentered the roadway east of Balsam and continued without stopping. Investigators believe there are witnesses to the collision or witnesses who may have seen the badly damaged vehicle fleeing the scene, and anyone who may have information on the collision or suspect driver, is asked to contact Deputy Scott LaFond or Sergeant Doug Hubbard with the Hesperia Station 760-947-1500.
Main Street was closed between 11th and Cottonwood Avenues for the duration of the investigation. The City of Hesperia officials also shared via social media that the closure includes all side streets that intersect Main Street within the closure area. All roads were reopened at around 1:00 p.m.
