THOUSAND PALMS – A 21-year-old La Mirada man lost his life on Tuesday morning while driving on the 10 freeway in Thousand Palms. At around 1:57 a.m. dispatchers received a report of a two-vehicle traffic collision on the 10 freeway west, east of Monterey Avenue.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to find a mangled 1998 Honda Accord and a 2012 Freightliner, 3-axle commercial vehicle. Through investigation, CHP officers learned that Honda was traveling westbound on the 10 freeway when for reasons that remain under investigation, he traveled off the left side of the freeway and hit the center divider. “The Honda then traveled in a northwesterly direction across all lanes of traffic and collided with the right shoulder concrete wall, ultimately becoming disabled in the slow lane,” CHP officials said.
The Freightliner, driven by Jose Saucedo, 39, of Nogales, Arizona, was driving westbound in the slow lane when before he could avoid it, he slammed into the disabled Honda. The Riverside County Coroner’s office identified the deceased La Mirada man as Anthony Herrera. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. The westbound lanes of traffic remained closed for over an hour, then one of the two westbound lanes was reopened. During the closure, traffic was diverted off of the freeway at Cook Street and diverted to westbound Varner Road. CHP officials cannot yet confirm if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
