ADELANTO – A 57-year-old Adelanto man was airlifted with serious injuries after an unlicensed driver slammed into him after pressing the gas by mistake when trying to press the brake.
At around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 9, 2018, deputies from the Victor Valley Station and emergency medical personnel responded to the Chevron Gas Station, located at 11500 Bartlett Avenue in the City of Adelanto for the report of a traffic collision. The reporting party told dispatchers that the vehicle crashed into the front doors of the Gas Station.
When they arrived they learned that the driver, Harvey Fenstemaker, 61, of Adelanto, a double amputee was using his left leg where he is missing a foot to power the vehicle. When attempting to press the brake, Fenstemaker accidentally pressed the gas instead, causing the vehicle to hit a pedestrian, identified as Jeffrey Irvin, 57, of Adelanto, who was sitting in front of the store. After hitting Irvin, the vehicle continued through the front doors of the business.
Irvin sustained major injuries and was airlifted to the trauma center for treatment. Fenstermaker was transported by ambulance to the hospital. Fenstermaker has not been cited at this time and the estimated damage to the business has not yet been determined.
