Man Arrested for Fatal Adelanto Shooting Previously Convicted of an Unrelated Shooting

ADELANTO, Ca. – A 40-year-old Adelanto man was arrested for the shooting death of Joel Lopez, 29, of Adelanto.

On Wednesday, September 4, 2019, deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to the report of a shooting in the 11300 block of Bartlett Avenue in the City of Adelanto. When they arrived they located Joel Lopez suffering from a gunshot wound. Lopez was pronounced deceased by paramedics at the scene. 

Homicide detectives responded to the scene to assume the investigation leading to the arrest of Patrick Eugene Coleman on Thursday, September 5, 2019. His arrest was made at an Adelanto home located at 10943  Aztec Lane in the City of Adelanto. He was transported to the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and was booked for Murder. 

Coleman was found to be on Post Release Community Supervision at the time of the shooting and is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday, September 10, 2019.

Coleman was arrested in August 2011 in New York after he fled following a shooting in the 11200 block of Auburn Avenue in the City of Adelanto in May 2011. Authorities said that the shooting was over a vehicle that Coleman purchased from the victim that broke down. No one was injured as a result of that shooting, officials said.

He was extridited back to San Bernardino Count, where he was convicted and sentenced to 5 years in prison, for Assault with a Firearm on Person and a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm during a felony. He two years and eight months for time served, which included conduct credit.
