CHINO HILLS, Calif. – A man believed to be under the influence of an unknown substance was shot and killed after running toward authorities with knives on Tuesday.
Deputies responded for the report of a man brandishing a knife, yelling, and walking into traffic near Descanso and Pipeline Avenues in Chino Hills on Tuesday at 7:47 p.m. Callers said that the subject, later identified as Jose Javier Gonzalez was carrying two knives. When deputies arrived, they contacted Gonzalez but he was uncooperative. He threatened to kill people while in the densely populated area, authorities said.
“As deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation, Gonzalez ignored deputies’ commands to drop his weapons and deputies deployed less lethal rounds,” Sheriff’s officials said. “Moments later, while still armed with two knives, Gonzalez ran toward a deputy and a deputy involved shooting occurred.” Gonzalez was transported to the hospital but died as a result of his injuries. As part of department protocol, Homicide investigators are investigating the incident.
