HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A man was charged for stealing a Marilyn Monroe statue from a public art sculpture in Hollywood, LA County District Attorney’s officials said.
Austin Mikel Clay, 26, of Glendale, faces one felony count each of grand theft of property at more than $950 and vandalism causing $400 in damage. Clay was arrested at his home on Friday, June 21, 2019.
He will be arraigned on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Clay allegedly climbed the sculpture on Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue on June 16, 2019. He allegedly sawed off the statue that topped the artwork.
The complaint says that the statue is the property of the City of Los Angeles. If convicted as charged, Clay faces up to three years in jail. Prosecutors are recommending that bail is set at $45,000.
Clay is the same suspect convicted in the destruction of President Donald Trump’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year in July. Both incidents were captured on surveillance.
