HEMET, Calif. – A man is in critical condition following a motel fire on West Florida Avenue in Hemet on Monday.

At around 7:58 p.m. Hemet Police were cleaning the scene of a call for service in the 3800 block of West Florida Avenue when they were made aware of smoke coming from an upstairs motel room. The officers followed the smoke to the room and forced entry. They searched the room and noticed that the bathroom door was locked. The forced the door open but the thick smoke stopped the officers from entering or even seeing into the bathroom.

Preliminary investigation suggests the male started the fire; however, the cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact City of Hemet Police Investigator M. Gomez at 951-765-2422.
