GLENDALE, Az. – A 27-year-old mother was arrested last week for leaving her baby inside of a locked car while grocery shopping on a 114-degree day.
On July 12, 2019, police responded to Fry’s Food at 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road for the report of an infant locked in a vehicle. When police arrived the engine was off and the windows are up with the 3-month-old baby inside. In order to get to the baby, police broke through the front window. The baby appeared to be in good condition when checked by emergency medical personnel at the scene.
The child’s mother was found inside the store and told officers that she decided to bring her baby at the last minute. She forgot she was in the car since she was sleeping in the backseat of the vehicle. Through investigation and review of surveillance footage, it was determined that the baby’s mother, Jessica Umtuch, 27, of Glendale Arizona, was inside the store for around 15 minutes before being alerted of her baby being inside the hot car.
Umtuch was charged with Child Abuse and Child Endangerment as a result of the incident.
