CAJON PASS – A Huntington Beach domestic violence suspect shot and hit a police officer, and fled in a multi-county pursuit that ended in death. Police responded to a report of domestic violence near Yorktown Avenue and Bushard Street.
Upon arrival, the male suspect quickly jumped into his vehicle and fled the scene leading to a pursuit. During the pursuit, the suspect stopped briefly and shot at the
officer. A bullet made contact with the officer’s chest area, but according to authorities, the round ricochet off of his badge, saving his life. “We as officers work so very hard for the privilege to wear the badge, never imagining it may one day save our life,” said CHP Officer Carapia.
The police lost sight of the suspect for a short time, but later spotted him again and attempted to stop him, The suspect again fled through four different California Highway Patrol jurisdictions until he exited on the Cleghorn offramp and veered right down an embankment. His vehicle immediately burst into flames killing the suspect.
The Huntington Police officer who was shot was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released suffering from only minor injuries.
