BARSTOW – One was killed, three were injured, and one is in custody following an officer-involved shooting in the City of Barstow on Thursday morning.
At around 10:53 a.m. police from the Barstow station responded to a call reporting a suspicious vehicle in the Walmart parking lot located at 301 Montara Road in the City of Barstow. When officers arrived they located the vehicle, described as a black Ford Mustang moving in the parking lot and stopping in a parking stall. Officers believed that the drivers was wanted for questioning regarding a recently stolen vehicle.
The officers exited the vehicle and ordered the driver out of the vehicle. “The suspect/driver began accelerating his vehicle in reverse striking a police vehicle,” said City of Barstow Spokesman Anthony Riley. “The vehicle then accelerated forward towards the officers, and then accelerated in reverse towards officers and striking another patrol vehicle.”
At least one of the officers fired an undisclosed number of rounds, killing the driver. The passenger, a female, was also shot and was airlifted to Loma Linda Medical Center for treatment of her injuries. One male passenger sustained lower bodily injuries as he exited the vehicle just as the driver attempted to escape. Both injured passengers reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The injured male passenger was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. One male passenger was not injured and was detained at the Barstow Police Department. One officer was injured, but is expected to fully recover from his injuries. “Any vehicles in the containment zone of the investigation will not be released until the investigation is complete, and Wal-Mart will remain closed until further notice that the investigation is complete,” said Riley.
Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division was requested to conduct the officer involved shooting investigation.
