COMPTON – The mother of Andrew Moreno, one of the three men shot and killed at Raymond Street Park in the City of Compton on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, said her son was just in the “wrong place at the wrong time”.
The bodies of the men were located Tuesday night inside a utility room, that at least one person appeared to be living in. The room connected the park restrooms was littered with bullet casings as detectives searched the scene for evidence. In the days following the shooting, on Thursday, November 24, 2016, the victims were identified as Juan Lara, 22, Andrew Moreno, 21, and Arnold Villa, 29.
Rachel Moreno, the mother of Andrew Moreno told a 24/7 Headline News reporter that her son sometimes chose to stay on the streets, but was never without a place to stay. “He just didn’t want to follow the rules they had set,” she said. She also said that she believes that her son knew the other two victims for approximately one month prior to the shooting. Authorities are being tight-lipped regarding the case and although there is at least one person of interest, there are no known suspects at this time.
Rachel Moreno said that she is now concerned for Andrew’s children, a 4-year-old, who was not his biologically, but called him “daddy” and cared for her as his own and his biological 3-month-old daughter. Prior to moving, Andrew Moreno lived with his mother in the City of Victorville and attended Goodwill High School. He later lived with his mother in Hesperia, but he moved to be closer to his girlfriend, who lives in Culver City when she became pregnant with his child. Rachel Moreno said that her son was looking for work and was always concerned about providing for his family, but was having a difficult time.
The family is left now with not only the loss of a family member but also the expenses of a proper memorial service. “He was young and full of energy, he was liked very much,” said Rachel Moreno. A family member has set up a memorial account to help raise the funds necessary to have the proper memorial and burial services for the 21-year-old father, son, brother, and friend.
