APPLE VALLEY – Operation Kitty Fix has become well-known throughout the High Desert, with over 3200 cat owners receiving a voucher to get their cat spayed or neutered at a greatly reduced cost. Cat owners throughout the High Desert have counted on Operation Kitty Fix, but owner Melanie Nolan shared a concern on Tuesday morning that operations may stop as early as August 1st due to a lack of donations.
It was Melanie’s mission to provide the resource for individuals and families with limited income to get cats spayed or neutered. It all began in 2014, after rescuing cats for many years and seeing numerous litters of kittens offered for free and for sale on Facebook pet groups. Melanie said that some of the kittens were from the same mother cat and she was left to wonder if the high cost of spaying and neutering contributed to this problem.
In November 2014, Operation Kitty fix began operating as a non-profit organization. WIth the help of Bear Valley Animal Hospital and the special pricing that they have allowed her to offer to those receiving vouchers over 3000 pets have been spayed or neutered. The vouchers allow pet owners to get their cat spayed or neutered for around $55-$60 when the regular price is $89 to $100. Operation Kitty Fix also provides a resource list with the vouchers, that with the assistance of other organizations including POPCO and Actors and Others for Animals can help reduce the cost to anywhere from $5 to $30 for the cat owner.
Melanie and Louis fund much of the costs on their own, which is difficult with the couple being in their 70’s with a limited income. Melanie said that so far for 2017, being six months into the year, they have only received $80 in donations. “I pay for stamps, envelopes, and ink which are all very pricey,” said Melanie. “I do pink paper, blue and white. I have asked before for donations to no avail.” Melanie said that they can use monetary donations or even a gift card to Staples to assist with the cost of supplies.
Monetary donations can be made through their High Desert Community Foundation page. You can also find out more about ‘Operation Kitty Fix” by following their Facebook Page.
