PALM SPRINGS – Bicycle theft has been a problem in the Palm Springs area in recent months. Last week, Palm Springs Police Department Officers in the downtown area conducted a special operation to nab these thieves. The police department placed unmarked bicycles in front of businesses in the 1700 block of East Vista Chino.
At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, the officers noticed that the bike was removed by a male subject and placed onto the SunBus rack. The male suspect, later identified as Levi Longmire, a Palm Springs resident then got onto the bus at the corner of North Sunrise Way and East Vista Chino.
After witnessing the theft take place, officers entered the bus and detained Longmire. Officers learned that Longmire was on probation during his arrest for the theft of the bicycle and a probation violation. While searching suspect Longmire 39 grams (over 1 ounce) of methamphetamine was location in his possession that was believed to be in his possession for the purpose of sale.
Longmire was arrested and booked into the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning for the theft of the bike, and the possession of drugs for the purpose of sale.
