At around 1:30 a.m. the California Highway Patrol and emergency medical personnel responded to a traffic collision with extrication. CHP officials said that Kyle Rojas, 22, was driving a Kia Soul eastbound on SR-247, just east of Walker Road when he swerved into the westbound lane of traffic. A 30-year-old Barstow man was traveling westbound on SR-247 in a Hummer H2. The two vehicles attempted to avoid the collision, but the vehicles collided head-on.
When an uninvolved party stopped to help, he found the Rojas and his passenger, Megan Palacios unconscious inside the Kia. When paramedics arrived Rojas and Palacios were pronounced deceased. The driver of the Hummer sustained minor injuries, but his female passenger sustained major injuries. A one-year-old child was also in the Hummer in his car seat and was not injured.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
