WASHINGTON, D.C. – After spending nearly a lifetime caring for children, supporting a family and for some, climbing the corporate ladder many find themselves alone and often times even put in the hands of a stranger for their care. In this care and sometimes even when in the hands of family elderly men and women face abuse and neglect.
President Barack Obama on Wednesday named June 15th World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day. “I call upon all Americans to observe this day by learning the signs of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and by raising awareness about this important public health issue,” said President Obama in a Wednesday release.
Around 10 percent of seniors, mostly women, in the United States experience mistreatment, abuse or neglect. This includes sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. Few receive the help that they need for this underreported crime. “Today, we join our international partners in renewing our commitment to combat and raise awareness of elder abuse, and in striving to ensure security and dignity for all senior,” added Obama.
Financial exploitation also occurs through theft and fraud. Neglect and abandonment also cause emotional and physical pain to these vulnerable individuals. The Obama administration would like to address the issue by providing public awareness educating the public about the warning signs and prevention.
“My Administration is devoted to strengthening Medicare, Medicaid, the Older Americans Act, and Social Security,” President Obama said. “Together, these programs have significantly reduced the rate of seniors living in poverty, helped older Americans access health care and quality care services, and allowed older Americans to remain independent as they age. “
President Obama is asking American citizens and the world to use this day to become educated about the warning signs and ways to prevent the abuse and/or neglect to the elderly.
