PALM SPRINGS, Ca. – Two officers and four Sergeants from the Palm Springs Police Department have been placed on a 2-week quarantine after being spat on by a suspect.
On January 2, 2021, at around 10:00 p.m., the Palm Springs Police Depart began receiving calls about a man throwing items at vehicle in the area of S. Indian Canyon and Baristo Road. The man had allegedly broke the windows of a trick and was running out into the lanes of traffic. Two officers and two sergeants arrived on scene and subdued the male suspect who resisted. The man yelled and spit at the sergeant and officers throughout the ordeal.
He was placed in the back of the police car where he yelled and spit all over the back of the vehicle. When they got to the hospital he continued to spit at the officers and required restraint while he was escorted inside. The male subject was not identified but remained at the hospital for a mental evaluation and was learned to be COVID-19 positive. The officers and sergeants were notified of their exposure and were placed on quarantine for 10 days.
The officers and sergeants were in proper PPE, including gloves and masks during the incident. They washed themselves following the incident but the saliva had gotten on their bodies and uniforms.
