CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – Parents are on edge after rumors of a planned school shooting at Cathedral City High School and surrounding schools that circulated through social media on Sunday.
Several students reported to their parents that other students are on Instagram saying that there would be a shooting at Cathedral City High School and some even heard of rumors about planned shootings at other nearby schools.
Palm Springs School District officials with the help of Cathedral City Police (CCPD) are investigating the reports. “This has been investigated by administration and CCPD, and the source of the rumor has been determined and is being addressed,” school officials said through social media. “We wanted to take a moment to address a social media rumor regarding a potential safety threat at our school tomorrow morning. As soon as we became aware of a posting earlier this evening that rumored harm, we contacted Cathedral City Police and have been working with them to determine the originator of the posting.” Cathedral City Police made contact with the student and the parents, who were all cooperative with the investigation. During a search of the family’s home, it was determined that the threats toward the school were not credible.
School officials said that they will be increasing security and there will be a police presence in and around the school tomorrow as a precaution. “The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority,” school district officials added. They ask that if your children see or hear anything that it is reported to school staff.
