TORRANCE – An alleged gang member pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the murder of a man at a Redondo Beach gas station on June 16th, 2016, LA County District Attorney’s officials said.
Long Beach resident, Erik Martinez, 19 faces one count of both murder and attempted murder for the shooting death of Lawndale resident, Mike Cortez, 19 and the injury of a second person. It is alleged that Martinez committed these crimes in “association with a criminal street gang”.
Martinez is accused of shooting Cortez in the head at a gas station on the corner of Inglewood and Marine Avenues. A second man was shot in the stomach but survived, the prosecutor said. Martinez is scheduled to return to the Torrance Superior court on August 31st. If convicted as charged, Martinez will face 50 years to life in prison.
