RIVERSIDE – A commercial burglary and arson suspect was arrested following a brief pursuit authorities said. On Saturday, January 14, 2017, at around 6:00 a.m. officers from the Riverside Police department were responding to an unrelated report when they heard an audible alarm coming from the Big 5 Sporting Goods store located at 10251 Magnolia Avenue. The officers responded to the store to check and located the two masked suspects attempting to pry the back business door open.
Riverside Police officials said that one suspect fled on foot, while the other got into a vehicle and fled the scene. The officers pursued the vehicle and the suspect eventually stopped, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect, later identified as 35-year-old Juan Carlos Duran was apprehended and arrested shortly after. Duran was booked into jail for attempted commercial burglary, felony evading, possession of burglary tools, and a probation violation.
As part of the continued investigation, detectives searched a storage space belonging to Duran on Wednesday. While at the Extra Space Storage unit, located at 6667 Van Buren Boulevard, detectives recovered yard and maintenance equipment that were reported stolen from the Riverside Unified School District (RUSD) storage facility the same night as the Big 5 Sporting Goods store attempted burglary. The items were returned to RUSD personnel on Thursday, January 19, 2017.
Detectives were able to connect Duran to multiple other commercial burglaries, attempted commercial burglaries, a vehicle theft, and an arson. These incidents included a November 15, 2016, attempted commercial burglary at Riverside Lawn Mower, located at 10191 Hole Avenue. Duran was also connected to the theft of a Honda CRX, which was stolen from the 5500 block of Ellen Street on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. The same day, a commercial robbery and arson occurred at the J&R Pharmacy located at 8151 Arlington Avenue. The stolen CRX was used by the suspect involved in the burglary and arson.
Following an interview with Detectives and Arson Investigators on Wednesday, Duran was charged with the commercial burglary and arson of the pharmacy, attempted commercial burglary of the lawn mower business, commercial burglary of the RUSD facilities, and the stolen Honda.
