PASADENA – A man who targeted elderly women in order to steal jewelry and other valuables, severely beating one, was sentenced on Friday to 95 years to life in prison.
Alonzo Bernard Johnson, 53 was found guilty by a jury on May 4th to three felony counts including; first-degree residential robbery, kidnapping to commit robbery and first-degree burglary, person present. Jurors also found the special allegations true including the use of a knife, a deadly weapon during the commission of the crime and that Johnson inflicted great bodily injury to the elderly woman.
The crimes occurred over 4-years ago in 2012 and the second led to the connection to the first, which until that point remained unsolved. On August 6, 2012, Johnson entered the South Pasadena home of a 79-year-old woman. He then forced her into her kitchen where he broke her nose and demanded money from her. The frightened woman was then pulled into the bedroom while being threatened with a knife. She was forced to lay face down on the bed while Johnson attempted to tie her down with an electrical cord.
He punched the woman in the head and face, threatening to kill her as he demanded jewelry. During the struggle on the bed, the woman’s 8 and 12-year-old grandchildren came home. She yelled for them to get help causing Johnson to grab the jewelry and flee the home. The victim suffered major injuries including a brain bleed and a ruptured eardrum.
Johnson was located and arrested a short time later. Through continued investigation, Johnson was linked to a June 22, 2012 robbery also involving a 79-year-old woman. This woman walked into her room and found Johnson stealing her jewelry. When she walked in, he fled her home taking the jewelry but leaving behind fingerprints and DNA evidence.
