HESPERIA – A female off-duty deputy was assaulted by a robbery suspect on Wednesday afternoon. At around 4:13 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the “Puff N Pass” in the 13300 block of Ranchero Road. The reporting party stated that a woman stole merchandise from the store as Darrell Fowler, 56, of San Bernardino distracted the store clerk. The woman ran with the two Hookah Pipes and then ran to the waiting vehicle. The store manager chased the woman and was assaulted in the parking lot.
During the struggle between the female suspect and the manager, the off-duty San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy noticed and identified herself to both parties. While doing so, Fowler approached the deputy from behind.
“The deputy turned around and identified herself a second time,” said Victor Valley Sheriff’s Station Spokeswoman Pam Hoffman in a news release. “Fowler cursed at the deputy and stepped toward her. The deputy ordered him to stay back. The deputy showed Fowler her badge and identified herself again.” Fowler then punched the deputy on her arms. Fowler was detained by additional deputies who arrived on scene but the female suspect fled during the confrontation between the deputy and Fowler.
Fowler was arrested for robbery and resisting an executive officer. Fowler was booked at High Desert Detention Center where he is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
