SAN BERNARDINO – In an attempt to reduce recidivism and promote family relations the Sheriff’s Department along with California State University San Bernardino and California Baptist University have implemented a program called Teaching and Loving Kids (TALK).
The program provides evidence-based interventions for inmates to encourage healthy functioning of those in the criminal justice system. Utilizing graduate student interns, the Parental Intervention Project (PIP) the inmates are provided with Family Relations classes, case management, clinical work and other targeted interventions.
Those who complete the mandated number of class hours are provided with the opportunity to apply for the TALK (Teaching and Loving Kids) classes. These classes allow the inmate to practice their parenting skills during supervised weekly contact visits with their child/children. TALK can be the inspiration needed to change the choices of the inmate, reducing the risk of recidivism, as well as reducing the cycle of generational incarceration.
