President Obama’s executive order that would protect approximately 5 million undocumented immigrants from deportation was blocked on Thursday. This Supreme Court ruling is leaving many undocumented immigrants concerned for the continued risk of separation of their family unit.
The plan, according to President Obama’s Administration was to keep families that are made up of both U.S. Citizens and undocumented immigrants together. This also would include allowing the undocumented immigrants to legally work, pay taxes, serve in the U.S. Military and otherwise contribute to the country that many of them have lived in for a large portion of their lives.
The Supreme Court, unable to reach a decision with a 4-4 tie in the case United States V. Texas. This means the case will be sent back to a lower court freezing President Obama’s deferred action programs at least until the 9th justice seat is filled.
As some celebrated this temporary block, others are expressed deep disappointment in the split decision.Presumptive Democratic Nominee, Hillary Clinton is calling the decision or lack of one – “heartbreaking” in a Twitter post on Thursday.
Presumptive Republican Nominee, Donald J. Trump felt the decision shows the importance of the November elections and “what is at stake”.
“The election and the Supreme Court appointments that come with it will decide whether or not we have a border and, hence, a country,” said Donald J. Trump in a released statement. “Clinton has pledged to expand Obama’s executive amnesty, hurting poor African-American and Hispanic workers by giving away their jobs and federal resources to illegal immigrant labor – while making us all less safe.”
