APPLE VALLEY – No suspects are in custody after the theft of a wallet left at a UPS Store in the Town of Apple Valley on Saturday.
The theft occurred at around 9:00 a.m. when the reporting party, who is the step parent of the person whose wallet was stolen went to the store to conduct important business on behalf of the victim. The reporting party left the wallet on the store counter when leaving the store. The suspect, a heavy set Hispanic woman with a small child placed a paper over the wallet to conceal it before looking around and grabbing the wallet with the papers. The suspect left, later going on a spending spree spending over $1000 at stores including Walmart, Target, Ross, and McDonalds.
Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station Spokeswoman Trish Hill said that Chase Bank called the reporting party, the victim’s stepparent to question suspicious activity on the account. The reporting party said that the charges were not theirs and the charges have since been reversed. The report was made by the reporting party on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, authorities said. The case is being investigated by the retail theft deputy for investigation and the store surveillance video is in their possession. When the investigation is complete it will be forwarded to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.
The victim was in the hospital at the time of the incident and has since died. Authorities are aware of the suspect identity and are continuing to investigate the incident. The suspect was last convicted of Burglary in 2015, and served time in county jail. She is currently on probation until March 21, 2019.
