LOS ANGELES – Few details regarding a Saturday afternoon Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer-involved shooting that left one man dead are being released at this time.
At around 1;00 p.m. officers from the Metropolitan Division noticed a suspicious vehicle with paper plates. In order to investigate, the officer initiated a traffic stop but the driver of the vehicle did not yield. The officer broadcasted that they were in a pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle.
When the vehicle reached 106th Street and Western Avenue the vehicle stopped and two Black male suspects got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Both suspects went in different directions causing officers to pursue one on foot. When officers reached the back of a home in the 1700 block of 107th Street, an officer involved shooting occurred leaving the suspect dead.
No officers were injured as a result of the incident and a handgun was recovered at the scene. As part of protocol in any officer-involved shooting, a thorough investigation is underway. When complete the results will be presented to the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the officer’s use of deadly force was justified. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review evidence collected to determine if any criminal laws were violated.
