GRAND TERRACE – An out-of-compliance sex offender and a man suspected of a sexual assault and carjacking were arrested in Mentone on Thursday.
On Sunday, September 25, 2016, at around 3:40 a.m. a 19-year-old female victim, who got into a verbal altercation with her boyfriend drove to a secluded church parking lot that overlooked city lights. She sat in her vehicle with her doors locked when the suspect, later identified as 34-year-old San Bernardino resident, Joshua Steven Medlock broke the driver’s side window. Medlock stood there wearing dark clothing and holding a flashlight/taser officials said.
Medlock allegedly held the victim in her vehicle and sexually assaulted her. The victim terrified and in shock about what had just occurred, escaped the vehicle and ran to the nearest gas station asking the clerk to call 911. The victim was interviewed by deputies from the Central Station and was able to provide detailed information leading to the suspect identity.
Deputies conducted additional interviews and finally, weeks later, was located in the 1300 block of Crafton Avenue in Mentone. Also staying in the home was, 52-year-old Jeffrey Lyle Olney, a registered sex offender who was out of compliance. A search warrant was served at the home on Thursday, October 14, 2016. Medlock, who was on parole for an unrelated burglary, attempted to flee through an upstairs window but was quickly apprehended.
Medlock was booked into the Central Detention Center for kidnapping, sexual battery, assault with a stun gun, carjacking and violation of parole. Olney was booked into the Central Detention Center for carjacking, accessory to a crime and being a sex offender failing to register.
