ARLINGTON, Tx. – A police officer attempting to shoot at an unrestrained dog and accidentally shot and killed a woman on Thursday evening.
At around 5:17 p.m., police officers, and the Arlington Fire Department were dispatched to a grassy area near Cantor Drive and N. Collins Street where the reporting party said that a woman was passed out. When the officer arrived at 5:20 p.m.the emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after. The woman, later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner as 30-year-old Margarita (Maggie) Brooks, was not immediately found, but shortly after the officer saw what appeared to be a woman lying in the grass, Arlington Police officials said. Near the woman was an unrestrained dog, the 25-year-old officer yelled out asking the Brooks if she was alright and if the dog was hers.
Before she was able to respond, the dog ran toward the officer barking. The officer who had only completed training a month before the incident, backed up, grabbed his firearm, and began shooting at the dog. The woman cried out, making it apparent that she was injured as a result of the gunfire. The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her chest and was rushed to the hospital where she died as a result of her injuries. The incident, was captured by the body-worn camera and the footage will be used in the investigation, police officials said. The name of the woman has not been released at this time. The investigation is ongoing, additional information will be updated as it is received.
