VICTORVILLE – Already displaced, many of the shelter residents who consider the Homeless Shelter their temporary home received a scare Thursday morning.
At around 9:30 a.m. Shelter Manager, James Wilson said he heard the skid of tires and looked over to see a silver Chevy Silverado truck hit the curb, go airborne, and overturn. The truck ultimately landed on its wheels against the High Desert Homeless Services Shelter living quarters.
“I was shocked to see the driver get out the back window of the truck on his own,” said Wilson. “He was not badly injured, only had a couple of abrasions on his face and head.” Shell casings were seen scattered about the debris being that the driver of the Silverado is part of the San Bernardino County SWAT team.
Two vehicles, a gold Infinity I30, and the Silverado were involved in the collision that occurred on Amargosa road near Anacapa road. Although the crash remains under investigation, preliminary investigations indicate that the female driver of the Infiniti was driving westbound on a side street when she attempted to turn left on Amargosa hitting the rear quarter panel of the northbound traveling Silverado. The combination of the Silverado driver attempting to avoid the collision and the impact sent the vehicle out of control and into the structure.
The woman, who walked over to the waiting ambulance sustained only minor injuries. The driver of the Silverado, despite numerous requests from emergency personnel on scene, declined transport. There were no injuries to shelter staff or residents.
Damage estimates are unknown at this time but the Executive Director of High Desert Homeless Services Inc., Jimmy Waldron said none of the damage is structural and no residents will be displaced by this incident. “We are just happy no one is hurt, this is all repairable.” Damage from the incident was evident from both inside and outside of the shelter including a broken window, a cracked wood window frame and interior and exterior wall damage.
