VICTORVILLE – A 42-year-old man was arrested after a carjacking an 82-year-old woman authorities said.
On Friday afternoon at around 3:00 p.m. the woman was sitting in her vehicle in a shopping center on Lorene Drive and 7th Street when Edward Tellez of Victorville approached the vehicle. Tellez opened the door and pulled the woman out. “The victim struggled with the suspect before he threw her to the ground and fled in her vehicle,” said Victorville Sheriff’s Station spokeswoman Mara Rodriguez in a written communication. “The victim suffered lacerations and bruising and was treated for her injuries.”
Suspect Tellez fled the scene and deputies were not immediately able to locate him. Late in the evening a resident reported that an apparently intoxicated man was parked in her driveway near Palmdale and Amethyst Roads. When deputies arrived, the vehicle was no longer in the driveway, but a vehicle matching the description was located driving in the area. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to yield and led deputies on what would become an 11-mile pursuit.
Tellez ignored posted stop signs and red lights. Spike strips were deployed in the area of CA-395 and Mojave Drive. Tellez ran over the spike strips, but continued on finally coming to a stop after a pursuit intervention technique (PIT maneuver) was used near Palmdale and Borrego Roads. Tellez was found to be under the influence and was transported to the hospital for related issues.
On Sunday, April 2, 2017, Tellez was cleared medically and was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for carjacking, inflicting harm on an elderly adult, possession of a stolen vehicle, and evading a police officer.Tellez is scheduled to appear at the Victorville Superior Court on Tuesday afternoon. Meanwhile, Tellez is being held in lieu of
$350,000 bail.
