RIVERSIDE – A 47-year-old transient was arrested on Friday afternoon for vandalizing the “Safe in His Arms” monument located at the Riverside Police Department, Orange Street Station. At around 2:15 p.m. a witness saw the female suspect pulling off and breaking tiles that were at the base of the statue.
The reporting party called the police and reported what she saw including the description and location of the suspect. The suspect was quickly located and detained. The suspect, later identified as Shannon Powell according to authorities apparently suffers from mental illness. Powell was arrested and booked into jail for the vandalism.
The vandalism of the symbolic statue showing a Riverside Police Officer caring for a small child is not believed to have any connection with recent events. The statue acts as a memorial for law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Riverside County.
