DEEP CREEK – A 19-year-old woman was rescued from Deep Creek Hot Springs after suffering a heat-related condition authorities said. On Saturday, July 15, 2017, at around 2:30 p.m. Sheriff’s dispatchers received the report indicating that Sofia Blanco-Scamporino was ill on a Deep Creek Hot Springs trail.
The trail on the desert side of the San Bernardino National Forest is surrounded by steep canyon walls. Walking miles is necessary to get out of the area and those who fall ill or injured typically require a hoist rescue. The Sheriff’s helicopters responded to the area to help locate Blanco-Scamporino who was found at the hot springs. She was surrounded by several hikers who were assisting her.
Based on her location and because she was unable to walk, a hoist rescue was required. Air Rescue 307 arrived and landed on a ridge a short distance from the scene. Rescue personnel hiked to the victim who was placed into a rescue litter, hoisted up to the helicopter and transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment.
